SORTED – student Christmas dinner

I’d been planning to blog about doing a cheap and easy Christmas dinner, but when I saw the SORTED version, I decided not to reinvent the wheel. I’ve been a fan of Ben Ebbrell ever since he sent me a review copy of SORTED – a rookie’s guide to crackin’ cooking. It’s a fabulous book, full of no-nonsense tips to make delicious but easy meals.

Here’s Ben’s version of a cheap, easy and tasty Christmas dinner.

SORTED!

On the subject of cheap Christmas meals, I also found this recipe for a cheap Christmas dinner on the Guardian‘s website. It includes a starter of lobster and crayfish tails. LOL! How the other half lives, eh?

  1. I have to say that I think the ‘cheap student’ dinner appeals to me much more than the so-called cheaper option from the Guardian. I’ve never understood why people have a first course at Christmas lunch – why (oh why oh why – lol) would you want to wait any longer for it than you have to? x

I agree, Cath. Maybe a little tasty treat to keep them amused while they’re waiting, though? A little amuse-bouche perhaps?

I bet most restaurants offer at least a three course meal. Must go and find out.

Does it depend on whether you’re eating at home or eating out, I wonder. Maybe people who go to a restaurant expect the Full Monty and maybe home cooks try to emulate that.

I probably would offer a starter, but then I have to ask myself is that because people expect or want it or because I’d enjoy the chance to show off. Hmm.

Thanks for the chance to psychoanalyse myself. 🙂

I read somewhere that entertaining is not about impressing your friends but about having a good time. I think that’s very true. And some of us would do well to remember it.

    Great comment, Cath!

  3. @Cath And what a first course too. Lobster doesnt strike me as a cheap option for a starter lol!
