Michael Saxon talks about the E&O Hotel

Michael Saxon is the General Manager of the Eastern and Oriental Hotel, Penang, one of Asia’s most prestigious and historic hotels. I had the privilege of meeting him and made the most of it to ask him loads of questions. I’ve already written about Michael’s thoughts on chefs in the limelight – now here’s what he had to say about the hotel.

Not Delia: The hotel has a long history of being one of the most luxurious in the region. Was it a daunting task to take over as GM? Perhaps it was just another exciting challenge?

Michael Saxon:

I was delighted to be chosen as the General Manager of the Eastern & Oriental Hotel and I am still delighted. This hotel is like one big home so staying or working here is like being amongst family. There is no other hotel like the E&O, it’s a landmark that commands respect. It reminds me why I joined this business in the first place…it oozes style and class.

ND: Do you have any plans for new ventures for the hotel in the near future?

MS:

We will continue to grow and learn from our customers and continue to develop our very own style of personalised service.

ND: What advice would you give to anyone who would like to work at the E&O?

MS:

Jump at the chance as I guarantee that you will never work in a hotel like this for the rest of your working life.

ND: Is there anything else you’d like to say about your job?

MS:

No, only that I love it!

Thanks to Michael Saxon for agreeing to meet us and talk about his life and lots of cheffy things. There’s plenty more to come. Meanwhile, you can have a look at Mike’s blog: Chef’s Tales.

If you want to look at the E&O itself, to get a feel for the history of the place, then have a look at their own website.
Nice hotel, lovely GM, shame about the website.

It really is a great experience to stay at the E&O, and I’d recommend it to anyone who can afford it. We tend to stay across the road where it’s cheaper but we eat there at every opportunity – the buffet at Sarkies Corner is very good value.

  1. I have to agree about the website. It drives me up the wall when music starts playing automaticly and I can’t see how to turn it off!!

I know landing pages are a necessary evil if you use a lot of Flash on your site but they still get in the way.

Nice hotel though. Wish I could have a couple of weeks there right now!

  2. Not Delia

Hi Andy, thanks for taking the time to comment. I agree it’s a terrible website for so many reasons. (Urk!) But it is a nice hotel. I guess we can forgive them because after all it’s a historic hotel and if they’re very last century about everything, what else would you expect from their website?
