Salt and freshly ground black people?

This story on the BBC website had me chuckling so I thought I’d share it with you:

An Australian publisher has had to pulp and reprint a cookbook after one recipe listed “salt and freshly ground black people” instead of black pepper.

I think it’s a bit crazy that all these books had to be pulped over what was, after all, just a “silly mistake”. I can’t help wondering, though, if there would have been the same fuss if the recipe had listed “salt and freshly ground white people” or even pink people or green people.

What do you think about it? Please comment.

  1. Mike the curry fiend

It’s pure paranoia around this kind of thing that makes people overreact over things like this (incidentally, do you know who ordered the books to be pulped?). Personally, I think people who get oversensitive about this show a worrying lack of understanding about what racism actually is. If only they thought a bit more about the actual instances of racism no doubt happening all around them.

  2. Completely daft! At first I thought it must be someone from the publishers themselves as a pre-emptive strike. But from the defensive attitude of their head of publishing, maybe not. “We’re mortified that this has become an issue of any kind, and why anyone would be offended, we don’t know”.

The recipe was for tagliatelle with sardines and prosciutto. Maybe the ingredients were right after all and it was really Sardinians and prosciutto lol.
