We live where the supermarket is a little bit too far away for us to pop in and buy stuff as and when required. It’s unpleasant to run out of things, so we tend to over-buy to avoid that. That naturally led to us throwing away a lot of food. We decided to tackle the issue a few months ago.
We bought an extra freezer for storing home-made ready meals. It might perhaps sound like an expensive answer to the problem but we believe that the freezer quickly paid for itself in terms of reducing waste.
If food is getting close to its “use it or lose it” stage, I try to do something with it – maybe a tomato soup, a veggie chilli, an Italian sauce, a curry or whatever. We waste much less now, plus there’s the advantage of having a freezer stocked with ready meals for when I don’t feel like cooking.
Does anyone have any other tips to reduce food waste at home?
