FREE THE BACON FROM THE BUTTIES!
BACON CONNOISSEURS’ WEEK 2009 HUNTS FOR THE NATION’S BEST BACON CURES
What: Bacon Connoisseurs’ Week 2009
When: Monday 16 to Sunday 22 March 2009
Where: Nationwide
Who: TV Personality Anna Ryder Richardson
There is nothing quite like the smell of bacon to wake you up in the morning! But there is so much more to bacon than just your average bacon buttie smothered in tomato or brown sauce, depending on your preference. What most of us don’t realise is that there are a multitude of scrumptious cures now available for us to try – with flavours ranging from black treacle to cherry, mustard to black pudding. And these exciting bacon cures are perfect for a whole range of meals, from after-work pastas, to dinner party dishes, and of course lazy weekend brunches. You can even make bacon ice-cream!
Bacon Connoisseurs’ Week has been established to give bacon buffs the chance to learn more about the many different varieties of premium bacon available today, and indulge by experimenting with some of our nation’s finest cures. British interior designer and TV personality Anna Ryder Richardson is the celebrity face of Bacon Connoisseurs’ Week 2009 and is heading an expert panel in the hunt to find the perfect bacon cures in a variety of different categories. Anna is challenged with ‘making over’ our love affair with bacon to free the bacon from the butties!
Anna Ryder Richardson commented: “Bacon really has grown up! I have been astounded at the variety and quality of premium bacons out there. I am really looking forward to trying them all and trying out ideas for gourmet treats that can be created using different cures.”
Chefs, butchers and supermarkets are invited to enter their best ever bacon cures from classic dry and Wiltshire, to smoked and speciality, for this national competition, with a selection of the winning cures available for consumers to enjoy throughout this special week.
Watch out for bacon offers and promotions in local supermarkets and butchers, and bacon-themed menus in pubs and restaurants throughout the week. When shopping in supermarkets look out for the Quality Standard Mark (QSM). This way you can be sure that the bacon you are buying has been produced to exacting quality control and welfare standards, and of course you will be supporting the very farmers who uphold them.
And for those of you that would prefer to relish bacon dishes in the comfort of your own home, the Bacon Connoisseurs’ Week team have created a bacon recipe booklet filled with mouth-watering, yet easy to prepare, dishes (available to download from www.lovebacon.info).
